From June 2022, a sampling test is required. It is to be performed by a competent independent third party selected by the ship owner or manager. BIO-SEA by BIO-UV Group is capable of providing recommendations to maximise ballast water system compliance and prevent any vessel delays.
Commissioning sampling guidance
Commissioning sampling shows that the specific vessel equipped with the ballast water treatment system replicates the performance verified during the type approval and required by the BWM convention. It is therefore a vital tool for spotting any misuse of the system or poor operation and maintenance of the ballast system. It may also be caused by a manufacturing defect or an installation error. Sampling is part of the commissioning procedure and ensures all mechanical, physical, chemical and biological processes are correct. The sampling process is overseen by the flag state or an authorised classification society.
The commissioning sampling procedure
Commissioning sampling under BWM.2/Circ.70/Rev.1, requires:
- Ambient water samples may be collected during ballast water uptake. This can be done by any means practical. An indicative analysis is sufficient to characterize the ambient water, so no detailed analysis of the uptake water is required.
- A sample of the ballast water discharge should be collected after full treatment has been applied, in accordance with the Guidelines on ballast water sampling (G2). The sample should be representative of the whole discharge of ballast water from any single tank or combination of tanks being discharged. It should be collected as close as possible to the overboard discharge point and during ballast water discharge whenever feasible.
- Samples should be analysed to confirm ballast water treatment performance that indicates compliance with the IMO D-2 discharge standard. Using reliable and accurate indicative analysis methods, size classes that need to be evaluated are organisms ≥50µm and organisms between 10 µm and 50 µm.
- Sampling methods and results should be documented as part of the written report on the wider commissioning testing.
